'Now I welcome the influence of the world press to bring the message of—Total Knowledge—to every individual in our world and invincibility to every nation in our world. Whatever life has been so far, it has been endeavouring to be better and better. Now should be the time to step onto the plateau of the fulfilment of all the endeavors of the wise throughout the ages.'—Maharishi

4 May 2005 Press Conference Highlights

Opening Remarks

Maharishi:Jai Guru Dev. I have been listening to Dr Hagelin’s very inspiring, very enlightening, very timely introductions to the press conferences, particularly today’s. The same thing that we have been saying all the time, the same thing that Dr Hagelin has been explaining to the press week after week in more simplified, more comprehensive terms is that the time is now in a changing mood. We have started our programme, and have sown the seed for fifty years. Now it is high time for the world to show significant possibilities and practicalities for permanent peace on earth.

‘Whatever may be the mosquitoes in terms of destruction here and there, for that we are very sorry, and we express our sorrows week after week. But we are not satisfied by just expressing our sorrow about the destructive tendencies in the world; we have started our programme. As I said the other day, we are putting one candle light after the other, one candle light after the other, and the light is increasing. Even though increasing by a very little magnitude—one candle light after one candle light—what protects our sentiments is that, in the rainy season, it is only drop after drop that descends from heaven. A drop here, a drop there, a drop here, and a drop there and all the rivers rise in floods—just drop by drop.

‘Our efforts have been drop by drop, here and there, but the drops have started. The rainy season shows that with the collection of the drops here and a drop there, the rivers have started to rise. The level of water is rising in the rivers of the world, here and there and there and there, drop by drop by drop by drop. But still quite a few drops have to come until one is able to see the floods really on the rise in every river.

‘We are doing all that we can do to save the world from melting into inertia through all these destructive powers. We are inviting the press, week after week, to tell us in what part of the world some rise of the flood levels in the river is beginning to be seen—somewhere, somewhere. The reports that you have, Dr Hagelin, are inspiring to us. We see that through whatever little drops we are seeing in the beginning of the rainy season [laughter], the rise of water is really enjoyable; whatever little rise, it is enjoyable.

‘We have explained to the world that we are beginning the administration of the cosmic level. The cosmic administration administers the huge, ever-expanding, galactic universe. That we want to bring in, and we have the knowledge that it could be fully awakened on the individual level. Such individuals are like lighted candles, lighted lamps, or lighted torchlights here and there and there and there.

‘In this field, we have Veda. The authenticity of this programme is in the Vedic Literature, which is the literature that explains—in great detail on one side and in a summary form on the other side—how the infinite, diversified universe is not only infinite and diversified on one level, but is the ever-expanding diversity of the universe. This enormous, ever-expanding universe is governed with perfect order, absolutely perfect order. No party politics there, no divisions there, no discussions there, but spontaneously perfect administration, which administers the evolution of every little and big thing in the galactic universe.

‘Expansion, evolution, is the nature of life. Life is everywhere; evolution, by nature, is everywhere. Only, one has to associate one’s awareness with that level, and all emotions, all thoughts, all speech, all behaviour will be according to that cosmic administration, which is evolutionary for everyone.

‘It is a very beautiful knowledge of life which fortunately we have from our spiritual masters in the Indian Himalayas. In the whole continent of India, there exists a colony of Vedic Pandits, experts in the knowledge of Natural Law. Experts in the knowledge means in the science of Natural Law. And with the knowledge of science goes the technology of Natural Law—how to utilize Natural Law to do what we want to do.

‘Now, in this very chaotic world, we want to have harmony, peace, happiness, and dignity of life. We have those programmes which can make every mind, every intellect, and every ego blossom in the full dignity of that administration which handles the infinite diversity of the universe with perfect order. We have started. We want to see just a little more evidence.

‘We are very happy about the information that Dr Hagelin gives us week after week. There is rising evidence that something is happening in world consciousness. We want to see a few more levels rise.

‘The world press will be happy to know that we will start adopting countries. We will adopt a few countries and begin to raise their national consciousness to the level of invincibility. We will specify one country, two countries, or three countries and begin to raise their consciousness to some higher levels of invincibility. Then, as we see more and more evidence of invincibility in those two, three, four countries which we adopt, we will adopt more countries, and we will have a global civilization rising to invincibility.

‘Globalization has been the thought of all nations from all times. Depending on how much they can think, they form a union of two countries here or ten countries there or twenty-four countries here. Now, the biggest union is the European Union with so many countries—ten, twenty countries. They join hands and then make the laws. They feel there are so many advantages in being together and functioning together—so many advantages in getting into groups. They are following the ancient saying, ancient proverb, “safety in numbers”. The bigger the groups, the bigger will be the safety. With a bigger number of people joining groups, bigger will be the safety for all those people.

‘What I am hearing is that there is a universal lack of knowledge of how to really unify. So they are unifying on the level of trade, on the level of education, and on the level of military. . . .

‘Dr Hagelin told me the other day about Einstein’s timeless proclamation about the dangers of making use of the research on the finer particles of the field, finer particles of physical values from any science. Dr Hagelin, will you tell them what Einstein said and what the scientists of his generation proclaimed altogether? In every decade, some scientists have been vigilant about what he said.

‘Dr Hagelin, is coming with a clarion call for today’s scientists. The clarion call which was sounded first by Einstein is now a more profound clarion call, because there are deposits of nuclear missiles here and there in five, six, seven countries.

‘Any time, any country, overnight, can destroy a lot of the human race. . . . The world needs a greater power than the power of missiles, and that is the power of silence with which the scientists of this generation are rising in the world. Dr Hagelin’s efforts are to give the ruling authority to those who can administer from that Unified Field of Natural Law, from where the creation is created, administered, and is evolving all the time. From that level is our offer to the world. . . .

‘Our efforts are quiet efforts. We follow the principle of watering the root to enjoy the fruit. Quietly water the root, and there you are attending to the fundamental value of the seed, in which the unmanifest tree is residing. From there, it sprouts into the big, huge expression of the whole tree. . . .’

Question: Empowering Scientists to Create a Peaceful World

Dr Hagelin: ‘The first question, Maharishi, has to do with empowering scientists of the world. Since the advent, as we have seen, of the atomic bomb in the 1940’s, many if not most of the world’s most prominent scientists have warned governments about the unimaginable destruction that would come from a war with nuclear weapons. Yet the advice of these scientists has fallen on deaf ears in governments. For all their knowledge and expertise, these scientists are basically powerless. Last week, Maharishi announced that he would train the world’s top scientists in a new science and technology that could prevent war and create peace. What will Maharishi teach these scientists that will empower them to stop governments from pursuing the destructive path, and that will empower them to create a peaceful world?’

Maharishi:
‘The science of consciousness, which is more basic than the physical sciences. All the knowledge of the physical sciences has its basis in the science of consciousness. Consciousness in its self-referral state is science and technology both in itself.

‘I will train these scientists in that science where the science is a scientist itself. It is a science; it is a technology; it is the scientist; it is the observer; it is the process of observation; it is the process of behaviour and action—that one unified wholeness which the physical sciences have glimpsed. I will give them a perfect knowledge of that with the technology whereby the awareness of the scientist will be the awareness of total Natural Law—self-referral and object-referral in itself. That is what I am going to do to bring fulfilment to the aspirations of every scientist.

‘Your call is for all the scientists of the world to come up, and not feel defeated by the power of the government, but amass a bigger power than the power that is administering through these present governments. Present governments are based on constitutions made by human intelligence. I give them the knowledge of the Constitution of the Universe, the divine intelligence, the Will of God. That is what the scientists are going to find—fulfilment through my training programme for the scientists.

Question: The Importance of Experiencing Silence and Dynamism Together

Dr Hagelin: ‘The next question touches on the same subject. Maharishi frequently makes the point during these news conferences that the Unified Field is a field of togetherness of peace and dynamism. Maharishi says, “Peace resides in dynamism, and dynamism resides in peace.” I am trying to grasp the practical significance of this statement, both for myself and for the world. Why is it important to know that peace and dynamism reside within each other, and why is it important to experience that truth?’

Maharishi:
We know, from our daily experience, our daily life has a state of consciousness in perfect peace, the deep sleep state of consciousness. Another level of consciousness is where one knows what one is doing. So there is silence, and there is dynamism. One gets tired of dynamism and one goes to sleep, to silence. One gets tired of sleep and one wakes up and comes to dynamism. One after the other.

‘In one state of peace, one does not even know that one is sleeping. In dynamism, one gets tired; one does not know what silence is. If there could be a combination of silence and dynamism, then silence will continue and dynamism will continue. Neither silence will get tired nor dynamism will get tired; the life will be a continuum. Eternity will become life.

‘We want to live the two opposite values together so that we know a third level, which is a combined level of the two. We are experiencing two. We are experiencing so much that we do not know what is silence—no experience. But if there could be a way where we could be silent and dynamic, then dynamism will not wear us out, will not get us tired. Deep sleep will be fulfilled with dynamism, so there is no question of waking from the deep sleep, and there is no question of getting tired from dynamism. Then we have both.

‘Unified Field means Unified Field—unified. And what is unified? Certainly opposite values are unified. Similar values are similar. There is no unification in similar values, only opposite values. When we say unified value, that means opposite values coming together.

‘Now what are the two extreme opposite values? Silence and dynamism are opposite values. They come together, and when they come together, then dynamism is perpetual and peace is perpetual. Peace does not devour dynamism; dynamism does not devour peace. Both remain. Life is then lived on a cosmic level and on the individual level at the same time. This is the supreme level of evolution of life—the individuality enjoys the practicality of cosmic reality. This is why we want two together—sleep and waking together?’

Question: The Relationship of the Eternal Religion and Temporal Religions

Dr Hagelin: ‘Thank you very much. Maharishi, this next question has come in quite a lot from some of our Indian journalists, and it has to do with what Maharishi described recently as Sanatana Dharma—eternal religion that never changes. It does not depend upon an individual religious leader, but rather it depends upon the underlying reality of life. What are the particular teachings of this eternal religion? And what is the relationship between this eternal religion and the more temporal religions of Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam? Can a person be a follower of Sanatana Dharma and also be a Buddhist or a Christian?’

Maharishi:
Christianity is what—two thousand years? Islam is what—fifteen hundred years? Buddhism is what—about three thousand years? These thousands of years, which have become religions, can only be the offshoots of some eternal religion. That is Sanatana Dharma—eternal religion.

‘Buddha felt something like that. He gave relief through his belief. People took him to be the god. Christ died for something, so people thought, “Yes, he is dying—dying for religion.” So dying and suffering become the ideal of Christianity, and people follow Christianity. Mohammed said something—ninety-nine names of Allah. There is a time value for different religions to bubble up in space and time. They are all on the human level of the realization of the eternal religion—Dharma, Veda.

‘ “Vedo Akhilo Dharma Mulam” means Veda is the root of all Dharma. Some Dharma of ten years or twenty years or a thousand years or a million years or a billion years we may take to be the rays of the same sun, the eternal sun of life, the totality of Natural Law. It is called Brahm. These different names do not matter. What matters is how much of the Totality they project. Sanatana Dharma is Veda and Vedanta, the whole range of Veda, and where the Veda ends. The Veda ends in the unmanifest. The whole expression of the unmanifest and the unmanifest itself is Sanatana Dharma.

‘All these which are called Dharmas or religions have a starting date and an ending date. Confucius and many others have come and gone. They started sometime, and they ended sometime. These are the space–time boundaries within unbounded, transcendental space and time. That is Sanatana Dharma. That is Vedanta.

‘Veda is like that ocean from where all these rivers of religions come out. Those religions started sometime. This is the difference: timeless and time bound, ageless and age bound.’

Question: The Individual Mind as Cosmic Mind

Dr Hagelin: ‘Thank you very much, Maharishi. Maharishi made a statement last week about thinking from the transcendent and about how Raja Training teaches a person how to promote thought from the transcendental, self-referral level of thinking to gain the power of infinite creative intelligence. Maharishi said thinking from this level is not an individual performance, but rather it is the performance of the cosmic mind. Does the individual still have his own thoughts, his own desires, when his mind is on the level of the transcendent, or is his mind a vehicle—an open vessel—for cosmic intentions?’

Maharishi:
The individual mind in that state is cosmic mind. It will be clear with an example. A wave of the ocean sinking in the waves, sinking in the ocean, now becomes the ocean. From the same quiet level of the ocean, another wave comes up. How does a wave comes up? It comes up as the expression of some memory of the past.

‘The ocean is the collectedness of innumerable waves, here, there, everywhere—on the ocean, on the shore, in the middle—here and there, everywhere millions of waves. That means millions of memories of the waves. With that memory, a wave will come up in the middle of the water, or, with that memory, a wave will come up at the end of the shore. A wave will have its own limitations. All these waves are arising from their own memories contained within the nature of one grand memory of the ocean.

‘Now apply this analogy to the reality of the situation. The ocean of unmanifest consciousness, the ocean of Transcendental Consciousness, the ocean of the silent level of consciousness, the ocean of the self-referral level of consciousness is a composite of innumerable waves settled in themselves. When a wave rises, how does it rise? It rises by its own nature, which is the nature of a specific memory which gives rise to a specific intelligence and strength of a wave.

‘We take the Unified Field to be a field of all the innumerable memories. These memories have a dimensional aspect and space–time dimension belongs to that. That is why it is said that all these waves arise as they have been rising before. . .
Yatah Purvam Akalpayat.

‘How does the creation come? There is one great proclamation about it. How does the creation arise? As it was before. That means the laws of nature or one grand total cosmic law, which had multiplied itself into different laws of nature before everything became silent, before the dissolution of creation. At the time the creation dissolved, it dissolved into what? We say, “The unmanifest, transcendental unmanifest field”. All the innumerable memories are there, and those memories come up. Those memories come up and display their unfoldment as memories, as it was before—life as it was before. The knowledge of the unmanifest is that knowledge of all the memories collected in their self-referral state, in their Unified Field state. All the memories are there.

‘That is why the ultimate expression for the individual is “the individual is cosmic.” I am Totality: in Sanskrit, “Aham Brahmasmi.” I am Brahm, I am Totality; thou art Brahm, thou art Totality; this is Totality, this is Brahm; that is Totality, that is Brahm. Everything is Brahm. I am Brahm, I am everything. This is the ultimate realization that is cosmic realization in the individual’s structure, in the individual’s state.

‘It is a state of enlightenment. It is so fulfilling for everyone because one wakes up in one’s own total dignity. Nothing unknown remains in the field of knowledge, and nothing doable remains in the field of doing or action. Everything is done, finished. Everything is known, everything is done. One is a lump of fulfilment, that is all [laughter], an expression of fulfilment. It is beautiful.

‘When this came out as a research project from Raja Raamji, then I thought, “Yes, the scientific age now has the competence to declare the materialization of the most abstract philosophical concept that has been floating around in human awareness for so long a time as a pursuit of knowledge. Now, with this scientific knowledge, we can count it, we can describe it, we can touch it, we can see it, we can smell it, we can taste it. All the senses of perception and all the organs of action can put it to action.

‘It is this that created the globalization of human endeavour, the globalization of the human aspiration for practical realization of the global pursuit of all mankind throughout the ages. That is why a concept of the Global Country came out to be realistically, materially established on earth. That is our pride of achievement in this age.

‘This is the time which fulfils the age-long aspirations of all the seekers of the world. This is the fulfilment of all religions and the fulfilment of all pursuits of all physical sciences. This is the level of fulfilment where one realizes one’s Self in terms of Totality.

‘This is a great time of realization of human existence, the supreme level of realization of human existence. We are establishing it on all levels of education, health, agriculture, and all our different fields of activity in the world. The effect is going to be, practically, the total value through any field of activity or through any field of knowledge—totality of knowledge through any field of knowledge, totality of action through any field of dynamism.

‘It is enormous. It does not matter how much the present generation is capable of realizing. But a few of the people, just a few thousand people here and there and there, amongst the whole mass of human civilization in complete ignorance and darkness, are like a few lamps on the road keeping thousands of miles of road lighted properly. That is our effort.

‘It is time for us to create the effect. We have been speaking for fifty years. Now is the time to produce the effect.’
