Opening Remarks

Maharishi: ‘Jai Guru Dev. Only last week I said that I wanted the world press to report to me if and when they see coherence growing in world consciousness. I said I am not going to explain anymore to anyone. I have been explaining for fifty years. The situation is that the time for me to talk is over. Now is the time for me to produce the effect.

‘I wish to remind the world press of what has transpired in this one week. Only last week I said, “World press, see what happens.” Now, with this demonstration of coherence increasing in the brain waves, I see what has been achieved to create coherence in world consciousness in this first week. What is the achievement? The achievement is a very clear understanding of how it happens.

‘How my programme to bring invincibility to every nation will happen is the achievement, the first ray of achievement, first step of achievement. The cause of how it happens, the knowledge of how it happens is the first glimpse of the achievement of the process of world consciousness rising to coherence. Rising to coherence means rising to more and more coherence. More and more coherence means more and more of the quality of invincibility.

‘The first week has brought out the logic, the reasoning, the technology, and the principles of how my Vedic programme is going to confer invincibility to every nation. How? By physically and mentally improving brain functioning, which is a measurable quantity of coherence. This is the first achievement of the first week.

‘The first achievement of the first week comes to us, very clearly, on a scientific basis that is fully logical and calculable in mathematical terms explaining the cause, the system, and the measurable steps of how invincibility is going to rise. How is it going to rise? By coherence rising in individual brain functioning. The professors of MUM have measurably shown that coherence is rising in both the physical and mental aspects of human life in groups.

‘These professors have existed for twenty-five years—since I established the university. Why only today, this week did they come out with a clear perception, which is seeable? You can see, you can touch, you can calculate, and you can measure coherence. By what? By the means that I am adopting to raise invincibility in Indian national consciousness.

‘I said the other day that I will take the biggest country of the world, the biggest democracy, India. And I will take the system of Indian heritage, Yagyas. What will this create? Coherent national consciousness, which is now measurable in the brain physiology on the individual level.

‘The mechanics of the development of invincibility have been demonstrated, observed, and brought to light within the first week since I said, “See what happens.” Now this is the mechanics of the measurement of invincibility. Otherwise, invincibility is a quality which is completely above the heads of everyone. “Invincible, how invincible? What invincible?” Natural Law, this is the field of Natural Law. Invincibility is the field of Natural Law. Total Natural Law is that which administers the infinite diversity of the galactic universe with perfect order always and always. That is invincibility.

‘Any man of the slightest intelligence—and we have a lot of great men in India—can understand this. The president of India is a scientist, a very well known scientist. I am sure he would not miss this opportunity to raise India to invincibility. . . . At least the president, being a scientist, could buy the coherence-creating methodology. . . .

‘India has that knowledge, that total knowledge of Natural Law that governs the universe with perfect order. India is the land of the Constitution of the Universe. The infinite diversity of the universe is governed by a Constitution, the eternal Constitution of total Natural Law. India is the custodian of that Constitution, the Veda, Total Knowledge. . . .

‘I want to tell the president of India that he has missed the reality. It will be better if the scientist president of India invites Dr Hagelin, a scientist from America, to explain to him. Or, if he is wise enough, whatever Dr Hagelin spoke last week or this week should be enough for any man with the slightest sense of science. . . .

‘The professors who measure brain wave coherence have come out to show that if the brain waves are incoherent, then the brain is not in a position to think coherently. A man will think coherently only if his brain is capable of functioning in coherence—the frontal, middle, and back regions of the brain. All this is explained.

‘It is a wonderful exposition of the scientific layout of the reality which these Vedic Pandits have been living generation after generation, centuries after centuries. That is India. That is my India. That is the India of the Indians. . . .

‘I have the knowledge; the Vedic Pandits have the knowledge. I have started some Vedic programmes. It has been, and has had to be, a very slow start. But I am not just starting today; the whole background is there in the world. I declared one or two weeks ago that I am starting.

‘I am not going to explain. If anyone wants an explanation, there are some scientists; they will explain it to you. This week, the scientists have come out to explain. What have they explained about the coherence of the brain functioning today? A system to increase coherence in the thought, speech, and action of the individual. And in a group, this multiplies, becomes more, like the one light of one candlelight, two candlelights, a hundred candlelights, a thousand candlelights create a flood of light.

‘We are starting a Vedic system of approach, and we are informing what is going to happen. The same is going to happen as the scientists have demonstrated today: coherence is going to rise. Coherence, in the Vedic language, is Sattva. Sattva is the word for coherence. It means coherence, harmony.

‘Invincibility is the extreme state of coherence. The extreme state of coherence is the self-referral Transcendental Consciousness of everyone, which everyone can experience easily through the Transcendental Meditation technique.

‘Many people have been practising the Transcendental Meditation technique. To that, I have added these Vedic values. Transcendental Meditation is itself a Vedic value; it is an aspect of Yoga. Yoga is an aspect of Veda. Veda is pure, total Natural Law.

‘This experience of total Natural Law is the basic point for raising any atmosphere to the level of invincibility, any nation to invincibility. As long as Vedic Pandits are honoured by society and supported by society to live their Vedic discipline unobstructed and undisturbed from outside, Indian national consciousness and world consciousness will always enjoy invincibility. That means harmony, coherence, fulfilment, lack of disturbance, lack of problems, lack of sickness, and lack of wrong things. . . .

‘However intense darkness may be, the lighting of the light is completely, silently enough to do away with whatever intense darkness was there. That is my strength. The Vedic Pandits may have been disturbed due to the centuries of foreign rule, but nevertheless, the saying is that the seed is not destroyed. The seed remains.

‘India has a very long time of positivity—Sat Yuga. A little less than that is Treta, and Dvapa, and Kali Yuga. In Sat, Treta, Dvapa, and Kali Yuga there are millions of years of time divisions. Millions of years of Sat Yuga means all total Natural Law—Sattva. And then a little less Sattva, and then a little more Rajas, and then a little more Tamas. These are the levels of coherence that the infinity of time sustains or enjoys.

‘The Indian history, which is history of the Veda, is the history of infinity. It is the history of immortality, the history of invincibility, the history of all possibilities. Now, being all possibilities, all kinds of nuisances also will come into that. But it is completely easy for the Vedic Pandits.

‘I am telling the Vedic Pandits that their success will be marked, and we will feel that they are successful when the poor Indians’ money, the Indian money, the Indian treasury, the Indian budget will be used for Vedic Yagyas. When the government of India performs Yagyas and collective Graha-Shanti, then it will be seen that their performance has been successful. . . .

‘The right thinking is that the Vedic Pandits have to be engaged in large numbers. Vedic Pandits are there in India all over—north, south, east, west—in every province. Whatever time of Kali Yuga this may be, but still Vedic Pandits are there. . . .
 
‘I am happy to pronounce one name, “Shiva”. This is one little name in the Vedic Literature. We have seen just now how the brain becomes coherent, how the wrong-thinking brain becomes a right-thinking brain with Vedic recitation. Everyone will be rising in brainwave coherence when the Yagyas are performed here and there.

‘Yagya performance is a simple thing. Ten, twenty Pandits gather together. According to Rig Veda they perform this Yagya, according to Sama Veda this Yagya, according to Yajur Veda this Yagya, according to Atharva Veda this Yagya. With Yagya performance every morning, every noon (Magan Sandhya), and every evening, the whole field, the whole national consciousness, will have waves of coherence. This is Indian Vedic life. Daily Vedic life is radiating coherence; coherence is radiated from every home. This is India. This is Vedic India.

‘I love the expression which I heard from Dr Hagelin. He said, “Vedic brain—actually Vedic brain”. From the Vedic brain, Vedic thought will emerge, coherence will emerge, and invincibility will float in the field of thought and action. This is just the first week since I asked the world press to see what happens. In the first week what has happened is that we see the clear principle on the level of physiology, on the level of psychology, and on the level of self-referral Being—on all these three levels.

‘On the transcendental level, it has been going on for so long. Here is the explanation of every event of coherence that is going to develop in Indian consciousness from week to week, from month to month, by the increasing number of Vedic Pandits performing their Vedic Yagyas. We have to see how the wrong thinking of the Indian government is going to turn into some sensible thinking, and how long it takes. Also, how long it takes the government of India to accede to this Vedic system of performance. . . .

‘Government of India, be awake. Great minds, wake up, and in your own home do some devotion, some recitation, something. Vedic recitation is one thing that needs a whole traditional discipline. It is very easy. This week the scientists will demonstrate what the Purana produces—what kind of recitation of what Purana. Purana is one of the textbooks of the Vedic Literature.

‘There are so many textbooks of Vedic Literature: the Purana books, the Smriti books, all the Shiksha books, and Vyakarana, Nyaya, Vaisheshika, and all of Ayurveda. These are all books of the Vedic Literature. Now the great scientists will record what kind of coherence, what quantity of coherence, rises in the brain functioning with the recitation of different parts of the Vedic Literature or by hearing different parts of the Vedic Literature. All that will be recorded.

‘This will be recorded on the laboratory basis—a small basis. In one home, it will be recorded. Here and there in India, Vedic Yagyas are being done in increasingly large numbers. They will record rising coherence. This rising of coherence will be seen in the trends of the government, because the whole national consciousness, total national consciousness, drives the government. When the total national consciousness is dirty, it is incoherent. . . .

‘The president of India is a scientist. Go for the level of science, not for the level of religion. Do not call Yagya and Vedic recitation a religion; call it a scientific procedure to produce, on the objective level, coherent brain functioning. Do not find a way or logic to get out of the influence of the Vedic recitation. Find every excuse to bring from your treasury a lot of funds for a lot of big, big Yagyas in every state. This is the treasure of India. Do not abuse it. . . .

‘Dr Hagelin, tell the press to see what happens next week. The Vedic Pandits, in whatever small measure, are going to perform Yagyas. Even one little candle in a dark room is sufficient to see that there is some light. One more candle brought in, one more candle brought in, one more candle brought in is how there will be more and more light. With more and more Yagyas, more and more Yagyas, there will be more and more coherence, more and more positive coherence in the government.

‘Those who think they are the champions of the government, that they are “modern government”, will not be found tomorrow. They will all be out on the streets. Either better thinking, separate people will come, or the same people’s minds will begin to be found to be better. See what happens.

‘I am focusing on India because I am concerned with the whole world consciousness. I have taken, as an example, not a small country but a real country, where the traditional values, fortunately, are favourable for this upsurge of coherence and unity—all beautiful, beautiful things.

‘See what happens today, tomorrow, the next day. Be watchful what happens tomorrow.’

Question: The Special Role of the Land of the Veda

Dr Hagelin: ‘The Vedic Pandits are keepers of the Vedic Knowledge. What is special about India that makes it the land of the Veda, and why does it have such a special role in the spiritual transformation of the world?’ 

Maharishi: ‘Life is from the complete unmanifest value to slowly manifesting, manifesting, manifesting, and the huge enormous manifestation of the universal physical value. Life is from the gross to the subtle. At the subtlest point is total Natural Law, from where the sparks of individuality begin. They grow and grow and grow and grow, and again become infinity in the end. Infinity in the end, infinity in the beginning—the whole field is infinity, infinity, infinity.

‘This is a very natural thing. There is nothing special. It is a natural thing. In the whole world consciousness, somewhere there has to be all upheavals, and somewhere peace and calm. See, even in the structure of the globe there are the mountains and there is deep water. There is silence in the middle of a huge amount of upheaval. So it goes on. This is life, nothing is out of it, so it is okay.

‘Everything is everywhere. What someone picks up for himself depends on the individual. Like in a garden, all the different fruits are there. It depends on who picks up what fruit. That is all. Eyes: everyone sees through the eyes. It depends on what one begins to enjoy. One hears. What one hears, what one does not want to hear, depends upon the individual. Then, when it depends upon the individual, we see, in the context of today’s topic, how much coherence or incoherence is there. Just that, how much coherence, how much invincibility, and how much non-invincibility is there. Anything we want to consider in life, we will be able to do it from point to infinity.

‘This came out to be very good after fifty years. Now we are demonstrating the collective effect. We start from the home of all knowledge, “Veda Bhumi Bharat”, the land of the Veda, the land of Total Knowledge, the land of the Constitution of the Universe, the Veda. Start from here. When it is a land of the Constitution of the Universe, it is a land of all possibilities—anything and everything.

‘We are going to demonstrate a practical possibility of life for any nation, for any group of people in a nation, for even individual organizations. It is a big huge promise of Total Knowledge. That is our natural possession. We are roaring like a lion today because that is our status. That is the knowledge; that is the action principle; that is the power of authority we have. That is the grace of Guru Dev, so we always say, “Glory to Guru Dev, glory to the tradition of Vedic Masters.”

‘ “Vedo Akhilo Dharma Mulam”—Veda is the custodian of all dharma, all duty, all action. Action is based on knowledge. If the knowledge is not right, then the action will not be right. If the knowledge is good and total, then action will be good and total, and all possibilities will be there. We are going to demonstrate all possible capabilities with the Vedic performances. We are going to transform the quality of Indian consciousness. Only we have to see when it happens. It is destined to happen because Pandits are going to be there. They will wake up. This tradition of Vedic Pandits has been completely ignored, but we want to uphold it. Then all good is going to happen.

‘It does not matter what has been so far. We have set up a target. Just see how the government of India behaves. . . . See when this government changes into some kind of right thinking. Right thinking will be Vedic thinking—all the Devatas, all the Yagyas, and all these Graha-Shantis.

‘My joy is how it has emerged this way with the grace of Guru Dev. See how it has emerged that the Vedic performances are going to transform salt into sugar. This miracle is going to happen. We take it to be a very objective, very natural happening, because of the perfection of the system of administration of the universe through Natural Law, Dharma.

‘We have proclaimed the level of happening. Then we will know our success. We think we are all right. Let us see how the climax of achievement, how intense Sattva comes in the national consciousness. For that we have set a level. When the government of India pours money at the feet of the Vedic Pandits for Yagyas, Graha-Shanti, and Vedic performances, then we will know that the government has come down to right thinking.

‘From the present wrong level of thinking, how long will it take? Maybe next the day, maybe next week, maybe next month, maybe next year, maybe in a hundred centuries—it does not matter. We have only to see when it happens, and that will depend upon how many Pandits we can engage. Pandits are all engaged here and there, but it all depends upon how many Pundits we can engage.

‘We enjoy our own floats and invite others to float with us. This is a very good time for us to examine our own knowledge, our own power, our own simplicity, and how deeply effective it can be. When one of the largest countries in the world wakes up to a right sense of judgment, when death is transformed into life, this will be the measure of our success.

‘Let us see how much we are able to do and how soon we are able to show and satisfy ourselves. Yes, go ahead. It is a very great, pleasant time for us, a very pleasant time for us. It is enjoyable.’
