Opening Remarks

Maharishi: ‘Jai Guru Dev. Dr Hagelin, your message is so simple, so effective, so truthful. Everyone who hears it wants to do it today, and not wait for tomorrow. All aspects of life are going to be completely free from problems for anyone who lives in the houses built according to Sthapatya Veda. It has started well with Tower II in Washington. It is very beautiful—very beautiful. Congratulations to Jeffrey Abramson.
 
‘It is very timely that there are those who know a simple angle to get out of poverty in their lives, to get out of problems in their lives, and to get direct support of the ruler of the universe—total Natural Law, the Unified Field, the Will of God. Now, in this scientific age, the Will of God is going to blossom in its real luster to maintain enlightenment on the individual level and on the collective level of every nation.
 
‘That total Natural Law, the Will of almighty God, always maintains order in the universe and always has a very parental role for everyone to rise to higher consciousness more and more, as everyone desires. It is the light of God that leads every desire of everyone, and every desire of collective nations to make more and more progress, to have more and more joy of fulfilment.
 
‘It is a very great joy to have started this Peace Government, a government which does not make a noise, like the government of Natural Law governing the universe without making any noise. On time the sun shines, on time the moon, on time the stars, on time the galaxies keep on expanding. All the time the ever-expanding universe is run in such a brilliant manner, peacefully, completely easily. That kind of administration we have come to know.
 
‘Now it is very fortunate for us to have started to establish that organization. It may appear to some people very impossible, but there will be all kinds of opinions on everything in our world. But we enjoy reconstructing the world, as John Hagelin has said.
 
‘People do not know that they are living in a house with a wrongly oriented layout. In all the cases in the world, a lot of sicknesses, a lot of undesirable feeling in the families are primarily due to lack of proper orientation of the house. Anywhere, in any part of any village or any town, anywhere, this word goes around. People are alerted.
 
‘Someone may have the logic, “I have no money, what can I do? I can’t leave this house, even though nobody in the family feels good with the others. There is something wrong somewhere. Always there is some sickness and all that.” But if someone says, “Probably you are not living according to Vastu,” he says, “No, I do not have money; what can I do?”
 
‘But we ask this man what happens if an earthquake brings down the roof. “What you will do? You have no money. Where you will go? You have to get out of the house. You cannot say, ‘I have no money, where can I move?’ You have to move somewhere.” Like that you should think that whether you have money or not you have to leave your house, you have to go somewhere. God helps those who help themselves. 

‘Poverty or wealth is not an excuse. If one has the knowledge, one can protect oneself. It is very necessary that, with the onset of the Peace Government, Dr Hagelin has started a programme to reconstruct the world, a programme to reconstruct America. Every scientist, every artist, every musician, every ordinary man would like to live in a place which will help him to protect himself from problems. It is a very great discovery that so many problems, so many difficulties, so many failures of anyone or any nation are due to improper orientation of homes and working places.
 
‘The world press should ask the governments if their presidents and prime ministers and ministers and workers are not living in homes with proper orientation. They will find every government is in some difficulty or other. Among themselves, they keep on fighting. All this is due to the working places of the government offices not being properly oriented towards the east. No one can help them; they will always continue to fight in any country.
 
‘Today the majority of the people select a party. The party comes with great joy and rejoicing. They spend a few days in meetings. Then they begin to go up and down in their opinions and discussions, and everywhere there is a whole chaotic scene, even though the majority has come into power. The place in which they are trying to solve the problems creates problems due to its non-alignment with the mathematics of orientation of buildings.
 
‘There is no way other than to start a global reconstruction programme. All these big, big cites—all these big cities in the world—have to be left out. If people want to have a life at home in peace and happiness, they have to come out. Wherever, they have to live in properly oriented homes. There is no way out. 

‘In the same way, education has to be such that it trains the mind to make use of the full brain, for whatever thoughts and for whatever behaviour is promoted. Any amount of lack of total functioning of the brain will never promote a thought strong enough to be fulfilled by Natural Law. There is no other way.
 
‘Today’s education is really not very wise. All these universities, each proudly says, “Oh, my university was started a thousand years ago”, or “Five hundred years ago”, or “Two hundred years ago”, and “My university has the largest library.” Can a university be effective by having enormous numbers, hundreds of thousands, of books? The chancellor of the library is proud of having the third largest library in the world. All these books are written by those who had never handled their lives properly in their lifetimes, and these are the books that the students are asked to read. They get their Ph.D. degree on books written by those who did not know how to live peacefully themselves. Their books have to be read by the bright scholars of this generation. They get Ph.D.'s on it. The whole thing is a very pitiable condition.
 
‘Fortunately, we have these little, little techniques to come out of these problems in every field of life, whether the problems belong to education, health, agriculture, engineering, economics, or politics. The whole thing is full of ignorance because education does not offer Total Knowledge. Our university, the International University for World Peace which is being established all over now by the Peace Government, is offering Total Knowledge. The youth of this generation will have Total Knowledge for two, three, four years of their time. With Total Knowledge comes the ability to do anything. Total Knowledge means all knowledge about the knower, all knowledge about the process of knowing, and all knowledge about the object of knowing.
 
‘There has been no university of Total Knowledge. Now we are offering to the world our Vedic University. It does not matter what name we give it. An International University means universal knowledge offered to everyone, knowledge that is common for everyone for his evolution and fulfilment. That knowledge of the Totality is to be offered by the University of World Peace which is sponsored by the Peace Government.
 
‘The whole thing is so profound, so very fulfilling. The hope is that the time has come for us to say to any individual or to any nation: “See how long you can save yourself from basking in the sunshine of all knowledge. You try to save yourself. Now we are not inviting you as we were inviting for the last twenty, thirty, forty years. We say, ‘Try to save yourself.’ How long can you save yourself from this enormous outburst of Total Knowledge in the world now?” 

‘So far, for many, many years, we have been speaking the language which came out to be a foreign language for the people. The Sanskrit language is not common in those countries where Spanish is common or Hebrew is common or English is common. Each country has its own language, but each language has its own limitation.
 
‘There is a language which is the mother of all languages, the Vedic language, where each word, one word, is enough to open the gates of enlightenment. One word, one syllable of the Vedic language is completely enough for anyone to rise to invincibility, rise to total enlightenment, because every word is an “open sesame”. We can say “open sesame”. You say a word, and what you are saying is Total Knowledge uncovered.  

‘With the uncovering of Total Knowledge, total organizing power is uncovered. This is that absolute language, endowed with the absolute number. The Vedic language has an absolute number. It is an absolute language.  

‘The Vedic language is not like any other language you can flounder about in, which has this meaning or that meaning—no. It runs through the absolute number. It is countable. In terms of the absolute number, zero is the absolute number. Zero is that wholeness which is Total Knowledge and total organizing power.
 
‘The number zero is the absolute number. Why do we say so? Zero is an inevitable part of any number. Any Vedic number has to have zero somewhere, either on the top or bottom or in the middle. Zero has to be. You put “one”, and it is a vertical line by the side of zero. Zero is the absolute number.
 
‘What is the absolute alphabet? “A” is the absolute alphabet because, no matter what you say, any Vedic flow, any Vedic word, any Vedic syllable, any Vedic alphabet, vowel, consonant, word, or paragraph inevitably, essentially has “A” in it. Without “A”, you cannot pronounce any syllable of the Vedic language. That is why “A” is a must in the Vedic language. 

‘Similarly, Vedic Anka-ganit is Vedic Mathematics. Any number has to have zero when you write it. If you write one, two, three, whatever, zero is there. Without zero, your arithmetic does not begin.
 
‘These are the aspects of knowledge: either the knowledge of the absolute number or the knowledge of absolute speech—zero or “A”. Knowledge of zero is total knowledge of mathematics. Within that zero, all logic is ingrained. All logic, all beginnings of logic, all ends of logic, all the end results, all understanding are very properly secured in that zero from all sides. You cannot break through it; it is the absolute number.
 
‘What I am saying is that on the surface observation of the number system or the alphabet and vowels—these values of language—there is an absolute that is “A”. Without “A”, you cannot pronounce any language. Without zero, you cannot count anything in the field of mathematics. 

‘When these basics are not taught, then whatever is taught in terms of number and whatever is taught in terms of language is baseless—period. Any knowledge is baseless and has no life. It is baseless, it does not have a base. So the whole field of all that is built up is meaningless. Ph.D.’s in mathematics and Ph.D.’s in language are completely unrealistic, hollow expressions. Such meaningless, baseless education can only lead the people without any sensible progress, that is all.
 
‘Making statements like that will not help. We do not want to say that something is not good. We only want to say these things to bring out that what has been delighting the generations so far has not been very helpful to make generations live what life offers.
 
‘This is the scientific age. In this, we are giving as a clarion call of time that ages have lived on baseless education. Similarly, ages have lived on a baseless health care system and a baseless system of agriculture. It is good to recognize that we have so far been living in darkness and we now are going to come out of the darkness. It may take one, two, three generations. We may not be here. But we are trying our best to lay out that system of education which will really educate the people in Total Knowledge—infinity plus infinity.
 
‘Get out of minus infinity; get to the plus infinity. Get out of minus zero; get into [laughter] the other way. When you write “one” in the Sanskrit language, what you write is a zero and a vertical line below zero. On the left you have zero, and minus one zero, minus two zero, minus three zero—keep on going—minus, minus zero to minus infinity zero. On the other side you have plus one, plus two, plus three, plus four. On one side is plus, plus, plus, plus, infinity and on the other is minus, minus, minus, infinity. Then you have a sequential value of zero, and multiples of zero, and one, and multiples of one, this way, this way, this way. Here you sit on zero, supported by a simple line, and you are a field of all possibilities. You can hold the reins of minus infinity and plus infinity from this one point. 

‘By saying all this, I am only saying that it is not necessary to waste the very, very precious time of one’s life, or the time of one’s nation, or the time of one’s city. It is not necessary to waste time. What is necessary is to plunge into that area which is fully awake in itself and has all the values of zero. All the values of zero means minus zero up to infinity, and plus zero up to infinity. Anything you want, you can have anytime. At any time you want means at any time you want. Whatever you want will be supplied by that agency of total Natural Law, which is omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent—total Natural Law, the will of God.
 
‘We are opening International Universities, and we are making all these functional values available in the Capitals of the Global Country of World Peace. We have to do it.
 
‘Somewhere, where a country was found to be so confused, we have sounded out what the people are thinking. If a prime minister is so busy these days that he has no time, we say, “Fine, he has no time for solutions. We do not want to disturb him. Let him enjoy his problems.”  

‘We are now creating the Peace Government. There is a prime minister in each country. We are going to create invincible countries. Whether the present prime minister comes or goes, it does not matter. We know we have a solution to darkness; we bring the light. The reply was, “We do not want to disturb the prime minister. He has created all those problems, and now let him be [laughter]. Let him live with problems.”
 
‘We are going to create a government. We started to ring the bell of the Peace Government in some countries. The Peace Government is a very interesting thing. We are going to establish it. It is a long story, but all these things have started.
 
‘Somewhere, we have started the Peace Government; we are helping some small countries to get over their difficulties of poverty. Somewhere, we have just ignored the governments; they are not going to last anyway. They are worried about losing their chairs. Incapable of preventing problems and incapable of offering solutions, governments must go, whether willingly or unwillingly it does not matter.
 
‘A government is expected to have a parental role for the people. Something that the people themselves cannot solve, the protection of the government is expected to solve for them. But if they are destined to go out of office, they have to go. The time is overdue for any government which is incompetent to solve the problems or to prevent the problems. These governments are going to be out of date anyway. Today or tomorrow, this month or that month, or whenever elections are due or whenever they are not due, they are going to be out.
 
‘Times are changing. You cannot fool all the people all the time. This time must come. This is the time when suffering has been enough in the world, quarrels have been enough in the world, childish behaviour has been enough in the world. Now is the time to have wise, healthy, prosperous, fulfilling behaviour.
 
‘Dr Hagelin, your proposals for the public to wake up are very timely, very beautiful. Rebuild America, and then America will breathe the fresh air of peace, prosperity, happiness, and good will to the world.
 
‘Every country has to be rebuilt. Here is the call I am giving to every government to see in what direction is the entrance of their parliament buildings, their assembly halls, and the places where the people work, etc. You will find they are not facing straightforward east. There is a hodgepodge in the orientation. That is why no government remains in governing capability from the time they enter those wrongly oriented buildings.
 
‘It is a matter of raising a voice, wherever there is a weakness in a building’s construction. The world has to be reconstructed. You better reconstruct it today or tomorrow. Children have to live in proper buildings for their proper education. You have to build new buildings everywhere. Everyone has to meditate, and everyone has to practise Yogic Flying every day, for himself, for his family, for his city and for his country, and thereby create coherence.

‘There is not much choice. The world has had long days, long years, long centuries in ignorance. Dr Hagelin, we would like you soon to be completely overwhelmed with success. The time is coming. There is not much time left for any country, the people of any country. 

‘It is a very good day, a very historic day of America, on which you are starting the reconstruction programme of America. Absolutely, get all the builders of the world to come and build and use their expertise in this most creative country of the world. It is very good. Ask the builders to build schools, build medical colleges, build homes in which to live, build office buildings in which to work, build Capitals of the Peace Government everywhere.’

Question: The Need for the Peace Government

Dr Hagelin: ‘Thank you very much, Maharishi, for those wonderful remarks. There are some very good questions from the press today, very interesting questions. The first one has to do with government and the Peace Government. Governments have considerable autonomy and wield considerable power within their countries. Yet last week, Maharishi announced that Peace Governments are being set up in every country at the national, state, city, and village levels. Why should an existing government welcome rather than fear the arrival of a second government—a Peace Government—to its village, city, state, or country?’ 

Maharishi: ‘It is a very simple thing for them to see. There is a government—a government of the universe. Everything goes so smoothly in an enormous number of galaxies, and all that you described. It is huge, but there is order. When such big, huge variety can be run with perfect order, why can’t a few million people of our generation be administered with the same order? That is all. The thing is that their brains have not been trained to function totally.

‘When the total functioning of the brain is not possible, then the partial functioning of the brain will not produce mental strength in the thinking, or in the deciding, or in the feeling, or in the behaviour. Therefore, every level of one’s life will remain topsy-turvy, completely unclear to everyone. There will be chaos.
 
‘It is education. Now, in what has become education, the goal is not enlightenment. The goal is service-oriented education and job-oriented education. A great fuss is made about job-oriented education. That means slavery-oriented education.

‘The purpose of education has come down to such a low level that the young boys, who can enliven their infinite creative intelligence in their own consciousness, are given that education which will make them a slave of someone who will give him something to eat. That is all. The enormous, divine potential of a human being has been so poorly estimated that it is good enough that he can earn a few million every year. That is his education.
 
‘It is a very poor governmental thing because no one is educated in the light of God. Even when some religious teaching is there, as in Schools of Divinity, they all remain completely out of the world, and are not even capable of harnessing the parental role of the Almighty. The whole thing has remained only on the surface level.
 
‘That is why we started fifty years ago emphasizing the importance of Transcendental Consciousness. It is from that area that Natural Law functions. It is in that area that Total Knowledge is lively in everyone. It is from there that everyone can be a lively field of all possibilities in the field of action.
 
‘It is very obvious that even though all the literature of every religion is embedded in that Total Knowledge, the knowledge of almighty, omnipresent, omniscient God—and the preachers use these words—due to lack of Transcendental Meditation in their programmes, the prayers remain too superficial to be effective. I am not criticizing any religion. I am only saying that every religion has remained floating on the surface of the great principles of divinity.
 
‘But it does not matter, our programme can be located in every religion. Prayer is the path of every religion. Only, the difference is that loud prayers do not take the mind deeper into the realm of divinity. They keep the mind hovering about on the surface sound of divinity and praise of divinity. It does not get into the transcendental value where divinity is lively. There is very little difference, but we are bold enough to say that with just a little more innocence, a little more simplicity, you can take a dive into yourself, and that is the field of the divine. We find that very well stated in the Vedic Literature.
 
‘It is a very beautiful thing that you said today. The renaissance is at hand now. We do not have to wait anymore. We are doing it; it is happening.
 
‘We are not doing it. It is a cycle; it is an eternal cycle. The up of the wheel comes down, and down comes up, and up comes down. It is a wheel of time. Maybe this is the time for the wheel to come up.
 
‘This is a scientific age. We can speak any language: the completely scientific language of Dr Hagelin, or any religious language of any religion of any time—Buddha or Christ or Mohammed or any sages of all times. In any language the words that they have spoken are such delightful words. Some said, “Oh, the land of nowhere.” All these beautiful phrases have meaning in reality. Every age has been speaking it.
 
‘We are nothing special that we are saying this. We are just repeating what has always been said, and what has always been real. Everyone was doing it, so we are also doing it. There is nothing special about it. But in our time, we say, “Yes, we have a lamp. It does not matter that we have darkness all around, because we have a lamp.”
 
‘Take them further, Dr Hagelin, with your exhortations of truth and the message to be followed. It is such a delightful thing.’
