Opening Remarks

Maharishi: ‘Jai Guru Dev. All glory to Guru Dev and the Vedic Tradition of Masters. We are very grateful that we have the simple formula, which will transform the world, which has started to show the evidence that it is on the way to be transformed.

‘Dr Hagelin, your simple expressions of Total Knowledge at the basis of this world transformation are so inspiring to everyone. Anyone with the slightest intelligence will go for your formula and rise to be a man who will not make mistakes anymore. When he does not make mistakes, he will not deserve any punishment by Nature.
 
‘Your simple expressions of total Natural Law lively within the consciousness of everyone, such simple words, are opening the doors of transformation. It has started and is more and more every day—more and more every day. As a new day comes, there is more hope of realization of that day when no one will make mistakes. No one will create problems for himself, because he will not make mistakes; no one will suffer, because he will not make mistakes. This will be because our education programme opens the awareness of the student to the field of the Constitution of the Universe.
 
‘Now the Constitution of the Universe is already a beautiful tendency of all countries. The formation of United Nations, whatever is its state, is in the state of growing. Its ambition was to unite the people and create a platform so that people may have the opportunity to discuss their grievances and resolve them. That was the hope of creating world peace through United Nations. But as always, humanly conceived ideas are not free from weaknesses and human failings.
 
‘The coming together of all nations is brought about by the irresistible, invincible, almighty evolutionary power of Natural Law. The evolutionary power of total Natural Law can be harnessed by every individual through a simple programme of Transcendental Meditation. Because total Natural Law, the Unified Field of all the laws of nature, is omnipresent and is not isolated in any boundary of space and time. Beyond space and time, in the transcendental field of consciousness, is the residence of the Constitution of the Universe, the total field of knowledge, the Veda.
 
‘The tradition of Vedic Masters in India has had the custody of this Veda. This tradition has been an oral tradition, transferred from father to son, from father to son. The total Veda was in the childhood of the Vedic families. Through the recitation of the Veda by the children, the whole Constitution of the Universe has been kept alive like this from generation to generation, throughout time, throughout creation.
 
‘Fortunately, the present Vedic Tradition got it. There is a proverb in India, "Whenever you have found it, it is good enough, that time is good enough." Do not worry about the past. When the sun is dawning in the morning, do not worry about the night. Live in the bright sun. We owe it not to our intelligence, not to our efforts, not to our anything, but to the eternal dignity of the tradition of Vedic Masters that the techniques of living life according to total Natural Law are still available.
 
‘We have tried it out. Because the Constitution of the Universe is a reality of Transcendental Consciousness, we got from our master the technique to transcend all relativity and take our conscious mind to the field of the Constitution of the Universe. Coming out from there, the mind comes out soaked with it, and the mind naturally begins to behave in accord with the Constitution of the Universe. That means the mind begins to behave in accord with the evolutionary direction of Natural Law in a natural way. That means the mind naturally does not waver. It just grooves into that eternally evolutionary direction of Natural Law.
 
‘Now we have the programme. We started the programme fifty years ago, but gradually, gradually, now the whole programme is on the basis of finding the goal today, tomorrow, every day. Now we have a word “Global Construction”, construction of the world. Who will do it? Constructors of the world will do it.  

‘So far, we have been trying to transform life of the individual and society from the level of mind. Take the mind of the individual to transcendental field, to the Constitution of the Universe, and enable him to spontaneously function always in the direction of evolution, where his life is supported by all the laws of nature. And we extended it to society. Do it in group meditation and the influence is more and more and more. Like the light of one candle light, and then add two and three, and put up a hundred candle lights; there will be a big flood of light radiating all around.
 
‘Our approach has been to transform the person from the mind. Having done that, and having seen that it works, and having proven in so many ways through scientific research that it works, we now want to launch upon a way by approaching through the body, the physiology.
 
‘We have found, through our teaching, that the body reverberates. Some part of the body, some part of the throat or tongue or palate or the heart or brain—some part of the physiology—reverberates in order to pronounce a particular syllable. When a vowel or a consonant, a single letter, or a word or a set of words or a phrase is spoken out, some specific part of the brain functions.
 
‘When the Vedic Pandits recite the Veda, those specific parts of physiology come to function. Their sequential functioning enables them, or habituates them, to always function more and more in their sequential manner. This functioning of the physiology in the sequential way—according to the Veda that means according to the Constitution of the Universe—always emits the thoughts and decisions and experiences in terms of total Natural Law.
 
‘In functioning, total Natural Law involves not only intellect, not only mind, not only senses, but the physiology also is involved. The total is involved. Dr Hagelin showed us and exhibited here the other day, when we were celebrating the Total Knowledge, that brain physiology mapping demonstrates how the brain membranes are seen functioning differently with the recitation of the different Veda.
 
‘The ability to function always according to Natural Law, which we are proclaiming and teaching and giving the experience of to the people, is a reality. It is not a fanciful gesture of good will toward other people, but it is a reality. Our programme to transform the world has stepped up from a mental approach to a physical approach. The physical approach has stepped up to a more gross physical approach. One physical approach is through the body, making the body function properly and move around according to the vibrations of the Vedic sound. Now we have stepped onto the more gross physical level.
 
‘The housing of a person came out to be such a huge requirement of transformation. What was found was that for peace, it is very necessary for the people to live in properly oriented homes. They should work in properly oriented factories, and children should study in properly oriented schools and colleges; otherwise, there is no chance for peace, and no chance of problem-free life, because the wrong orientation of buildings has a wrong influence on the body, on the mind, on the intellect, on the ego, on everything.
 
‘Now our approach is through the mind, through the body, through the physiology, and also through the reconstruction of homes. We have now a plan to reconstruct the world.
 
‘Just this one thing, a world of suffering, in many ways is a failure. A world of poverty, a world of all wrong things, can only be transformed to a better world by the transformation of every aspect of what life is. Life is mind, life is body, life is inside, life is outside, life is ego, life is intellect; all these different aspects of life have to be transformed.  

‘We are absolutely sold out to the grace of Guru Dev, because he gave us one little technique of Transcendental Meditation and made our mind dive into the transcendental field—the field of the global, cosmic Constitution of the Universe. Veda is the field of the transcendental field. The mind dives into it, gets soaked into it, and comes out to behave properly in the world.
 
‘Without diving into the Constitution of the Universe, and without being soaked with that tremendous totality of knowledge and its applied value in the technology, life is uncultured. It is uncultured, that is all. We say it like that, it is uncultured. That means it is not manly life; it is beastly life. It is the life of the birds and mosquitoes; it is animal life.
 
‘There are grades of species in the world—all kinds of species. We want to have our family in the world to be on a supreme level of all these species in the world, not a species that will pounce nor one which will kill the other and all those ugly things. They are not that.
 
‘We want to take our human race to a level of divinity. Humanity is not enough for us. We want to have that divine which is omnipresent, which is present in us. Only, we do not know it, so better we dive into it and know it. Know that we are divine, that we are universal. Know that we are cosmic. Experience it, and know it. Intellectually know it. On the level of mind, you know it; on the level of perception, you know it; on the level of behaviour, you know it. This is transformation of the world.
 
‘We are very happy to sponsor the invitation to the builders of our generation. The builders will rebuild the world. The builders will reconstruct the world. The professors will give that knowledge from the mental level. From the verbal level, they will reconstruct the effect of speech and the effect of the decision-making intellect—transformation at every level.

‘ “Reconstruction of the world”, that word has come out. Reconstruction of the world is on every level—all levels of life—from the very minute, very fine, to the gross and very gross and extending to the gross environment, extending to the far environment, the influence of stars and galaxies and moons and all.  

‘The whole ever-expanding universe is governed by the Constitution of the Universe. So we want to have that Constitution in our awareness. That is all that we have to do; otherwise, the range of Natural Law is how far? How much Natural Law we can know by studying, by reading? No, it is not possible, but it is easy to be completely, fully, and perfectly lively in terms of total Natural Law, and live that total Natural Law in every ingoing and outgoing breath of life.  

‘For the reconstruction of the world, we are now inviting all the builders of the world. The builders of the world will build it. How soon they can build it? It should not take a long time. When we begin to think of six billion people, we have to build—rebuild—one billion homes. We have really to rebuild one billion homes, properly laid out buildings according to north, south, east, west; the whole mathematical calculation is there.
 
‘A great part of the Vedic Knowledge is dedicated to the structuring of the housing system. The housing is one thing, then the structuring of the villages, structuring of the towns, and structuring of the nations. Every national capital should be laid out according to Natural Law. The administrators should live like that. The assembly homes should be properly laid out, and the capital should be situated in the Brahmasthan of the country. The Brahmasthan is the center of the country.
 
‘The world press will find out how many capitals of the world are in the center of the country, and how many parliament buildings and the presidents’ and the ministers’ homes are laid out according to this ancient architectural system of laying out the buildings north, south, east, west. How many cities, how many big, famous museums, how many schools, and how many factories are properly laid out? When they are not properly laid out, then they will have negative influences from their wrong set-up.  

‘Unless the world is reconstructed on every level, there is no hope for peace—absolutely no hope for peace. World peace will not be on the fanciful opinions of the different people. Opinions differ. A man is fresh, and he has a different opinion. A man who is drowsy or half drowsy is the same man who had an opinion yesterday. When he begins to speak in the assembly differently, because he is half drowsy or more drowsy, he is able to speak something else. 

‘All these opinions in the assemblies and raising the hand and all these decision-making processes existing in the world are intentionally good, but practically completely off the path of good—fanciful, imaginary. Go by science. Science means a properly tested path.
 
‘Does our knowledge of the Constitution of the Universe need any more testing? It does not, because it is so evident. The sun, a huge ball of life, moves around, and the earth moves around. This huge, mysterious characteristic is controlled by laws. The globe has so much water, and the globe is always moving in the empty space. Yet the water of the ocean does not fall down [laughter]. The water of the ocean does not fall down even when the ball is moving around, but the water sticks with the earth. These are not human concepts of safety and progress. Everything that is good is conducted by total Natural Law, and we have the programme—so simple. 

‘Through our knowledge in these international universities all over the world and our builders all over the world, we are going to educate any builder who is building a house. We are going to tell them, “If you build fortune-creating homes, people will buy from you at a higher cost.” Now the awareness is going to be propagated throughout the world that there are buildings, which if built properly according to Vastu, according to the Vedic Architecture, will create good fortune for those who live and work there. Those buildings, which are topsy-turvy with the north, south, east, and west door anywhere and entrance anywhere, have effects that are all recorded.  

‘We are going to propagate this throughout the world and are going to bring to the awareness of the people that a lot of suffering belongs to them due to their living in wrong Vastu buildings. It is from the side of the body—approach of the body—that we invite the builders. Builders are everywhere. It is just a matter of our people, who are working for the Movement, being a lighthouse of their locality, in their city.
 
‘In any country, in every country, we have our workers. But if they are alert—if they are alert underlined—they can engage all the builders to rebuild their villages, their cities, and their nations. Rebuild the homes according to Vastu. Take every mind to dive into the Constitution of the Universe through Transcendental Meditation. Put the children to take a dive into the Constitution of the Universe, then the children will never make mistakes in life. 

‘These things will mean that the Peace Government, the governing process, has to be so silent that it can penetrate every aspect of national life and international life and cosmic life. All the cosmic life and national life and individual life and family life can all be put in the line of evolution of Constitution of the Universe—just the one word, Constitution of the Universe.

‘In every country, people have created a constitution of the country. In groups of countries, there is a constitution like this UNO constitution. People sat together and said, “We will do this, we will do this.” But these human concepts of peace have not worked. They will never work, because of human failings.  

‘Human life is not yet perfect. After some time, of course, human speech, the father’s speech, the administrator’s speech will be connected with cosmic speech; it will be in tune with the total Natural Law, and then that will work. But just now—we do not go into negativity. We are very happy to say that the reconstruction of the world has begun on a gross level, on the subtle level, and on the subtlest level of Being.
 
‘What a beautiful picture you have created in this scientific age, Dr Hagelin. You have created a long, abstract story of philosophy and divinity, and you have brought it on a very practical level—absolutely practical level. The world will always enjoy your exhortations in these talks to the world press. These are the exhortations, the speeches, that are rewriting the history of the world. Kali Yuga is gone. The darkness of the night is disappearing. The dawn is on the way. So welcome the dawn. It is beautiful.’

Question: The First Thing a Government Should Do

Dr Hagelin: ‘Jai Guru Dev. Thank you very, very much, Maharishi, for this profound wisdom and the programmes that are literally transforming the entire world week by week. It is such a joy to describe this global transformation, but it is Maharishi that is creating the global transformation.  

‘There is one question from the press that seems very practical in light of all that Maharishi is doing. It concerns the first thing that a government should do. Maharishi is calling on governments to do many things to reconstruct and recreate the nation: establish groups of Yogic Flyers, offer Consciousness-Based Education for the development of the total brain, reconstruct buildings and cities according to Vedic Architecture, offer Vedic Medicine and hospitals and clinics. With all these possibilities, what is the very first thing a government should do now to begin the process of national reconstruction?’ 

Maharishi: ‘The government should start to be quiet about us. Quietly watch what is happening. We do not expect them to have that knowledge whereby they can appreciate us. Just quietly let us do; quietly let us create some candle lights here, some candle lights there in every country. If the government could be quiet about us, that will be enough. If the government can be quiet about us, it will be good enough.
 
‘When we have created something in their country, they will see that the conflict between their parties—one party pouncing on the other all the time—creates such a vicious circle in the psychology of the people in the nation that the people do not know which way to go. In the midst of this opposition of parties, when the flames are up in a house, we cannot expect any water inside the flames.
 
‘Party politics is so ugly. All the intelligentsia of one party is pouncing on the intelligentsia of the other party. The whole population is so shaken up all the time. In this state of governmental administration, I do not expect the government even to acknowledge us. I am witnessing this in so many countries.
 
‘I have no hope from any government at present. When some influence of coherence has been created—maybe within a month, two months, three months, but not more than that—governments will begin to come in, will begin join in. They will begin to come in only when our organization gathers some people in every country and creates some group flying. Then the government will naturally begin to come in. The government will then make amendments in education, in the health care systems, in agriculture, and in all the different areas of knowledge.
 
‘Maybe in three months we can expect the government to do this. Just now, talking to government is waste of time. That is why we are not talking to government. Because we have our organization in more than a hundred countries, we are asking our organization to teach TM to the people and gather them to do their Yogic Flying. When there are a few hundred people in small countries or just a thousand or two thousand in big countries, then they will begin to create coherence in national consciousness. Then the sharp, thorny edge of all the political parties will lose its thorny edge. Then a better situation will come. It may not take more than three months, then we will begin to expect the governments to act for us—maybe much earlier.
 
‘We know how to light the lamp; we light lamps everywhere. We are those engineers who know how to create electricity. We have to create powerhouses somewhere, and then everywhere the powerhouses will begin to be built.
 
‘Like that, for existing governments I have no hope today. Tomorrow, next week, next month, next quarter, I will be full of not only hope, but full of readiness for governments to act in their own favour. As the governments recognize and implement our programmes, the governments will be fulfilling their own exalted parental role for their people. That is our estimate for the governments.’

Question: The Spiritual Regeneration Movement’s Goals

Dr Hagelin: ‘Thank you, Maharishi. There is one last question that seems to be quite timely during this Guru Purnima Celebration and fifty-year Golden Jubilee Anniversary of Maharishi’s worldwide Movement. Maharishi started his worldwide Movement fifty years ago to “spiritually regenerate mankind through Transcendental Meditation”. Now, Maharishi says that he wants to reconstruct the whole world through his Vedic Science and Technology, including physically reconstructing the buildings and towns according to Vedic Architecture. Is Maharishi’s mission different today from when he started his Movement fifty years ago, or are all of his efforts today still part of his original spiritual regeneration concept?’ 

Maharishi: ‘We are coming to realize that which was conceived fifty years ago, the Spiritual Regeneration Movement. Now, spiritual regeneration has been so effectively achieved, there will be physical regeneration of the body, of course, and physical regeneration of the houses, of the cities, of the nations.
 
‘The target is the same; only, it is now being achieved in bigger and bigger dimensions. It was spiritual, and now, as the spiritual becomes more bold, it steps into the mental, into the intellectual, into the physical body, into physical houses, into physical cities, into physical nations—the same thing.
 
‘The thought of fifty years ago, spiritual regeneration, is well served. The arrow was shot, and the arrow is still going on, on, on, on. But now, it seems, the arrow has come to a big goal. Totality, the total Constitution of the Universe, will rule the world. Total spirituality will rule the world. All values of the spiritual, mental, intellectual, and cosmic have been covered.
 
‘It seems that the thought of that day, which declared the Spiritual Regeneration Movement was a proper thought. It seems like that? [laughter] It seems to be it was a proper thought, and it is going to be finally achieved. Everyone will be most positive, most integrated, most fulfilled, enjoyable, no suffering to anyone—beautiful.’
