Question: How Students Can Create Peace

Dr Hagelin: ‘Jai Guru Dev, Maharishi. I would like to begin with a question from the student press. Maharishi has said recently that the best way to create peace is to meditate. By meditating and gaining enlightenment, students will create a peaceful world. They would like to know what makes Maharishi’s approach so effective. In addition to the practice of Maharishi’s form of meditation, are there additional action steps and concrete things a student can do to accelerate the dawning of peace in the world?’ 

Maharishi: ‘What everyone can do is deepen their experience of Transcendental Consciousness. Transcendental Consciousness is just what the word “transcendental” means, beyond the boundaries of space and time. It is in the field of the unmanifest. For this, there are the advanced programmes of Transcendental Meditation in which an individual very successfully fathoms the Unified Field which is known today from scientific research.

‘The self-referral Unified Field is the Constitution of the Universe. The Constitution of the Universe is a reality in the unified state. It is Transcendental Consciousness, and the human mind can access that reality by transcending. During the Transcendental Meditation Technique the mind gets acquainted with the self-referral level of intelligence.  

‘In the word “self-referral”, there are two things: “self” and “referral”. The Self is the constant value; referral is the activity value. There is a constant value—that means silent value—and an activity value. In Transcendental Consciousness, there is a silence value and an activity value. Total silence and total activity are both in perfect union.  

‘We understand the Unified Field through mathematical equations and from the age-long awareness of that reality, which is the Self, one’s own intelligence, one’s own Transcendental Consciousness. It is a field of all possibilities, and therefore is the field of total satisfaction. Total satisfaction is only available when total silence is available at the same time total dynamism is available.  

‘In the unity of the two, silence and dynamism, these two are available completely one with the other, without distinction. This is Transcendental Consciousness, which is easily reached through the Transcendental Meditation Technique. In this, all possibilities are lively.

‘All possibilities are lively in the scientific word “Unified Field”. What is the Unified Field? It is a state of unity of absolute silence and absolute dynamism. “Absolute” means eternal. Eternal, infinite silence, and infinite dynamism are both together and lively in the self-referral consciousness of everyone. In that, all possibilities are lively.  

‘When all possibilities are lively, then there is no frustration to anyone. When there is no frustration to anyone, then natural action emerges from the state of no disturbance. There is no dissatisfaction, suffering, or anxiety. That means eternal fulfilment is the level where satisfaction prevails. This is peace.  

‘The Unified Field is a field of peace and unity. What kind of unity? It is the unity where extreme opposites are completely one with the other, completely unified. Silence and dynamism are opposite values, but are completely one with the other. This is the Unified Field.  

‘The experience of this makes a man free from a searching attitude—no more search is there. The search is there as long as the Totality is not reached. But in the union of silence and dynamism, Transcendental Consciousness, there is satisfaction. In the satisfaction, there is no frustration. Frustration causes imbalance, disturbance, suffering, and lack of peace.  

‘When we want to enjoy peace—individually, socially, nationally, internationally, globally, or on any level—if peace is needed, we must achieve satisfaction. Only in the experience of total silence—and within that total silence, total dynamism—is that state of natural peace.  

‘This natural peace is the Unified Field, the Constitution of the Universe. What does it mean when we expand it? It means the orderly functioning of the infinitely expanding, ever-expanding galactic universe. The galactic universe is an expanding universe. It is not only a state of static or limited space and time value of satisfaction. It is unlimited satisfaction in the state of Total Knowledge, in the state of total organizing power.  

‘The Unified Field is total organizing power. Its script is available in the Vedic Literature. Veda is that which is Total Knowledge. Total Knowledge is not in any way partial to silence or partial to dynamism. It is an impartial Unified Field of all possibilities, which fortunately, through the teachings of Guru Dev and the teachings of the Vedic Tradition of masters, is available within one’s own self-referral Transcendental Consciousness.  

‘This should be the target, the goal, and the process of education. With this, satisfied individuals will be created. Dr Hagelin just now used the word “global citizenship”. It is global citizenship when the potential universality of the individual is exhibited in single, isolated functioning. Vedic Education.
 
‘Every government has significance if it is capable of maintaining order and capable of creating satisfied, fulfilled, peaceful people. Otherwise, if the government is not competent to create fulfilled people, then it creates people who are unfulfilled. In their unfulfilled state, they commit actions, fully bound by time and space—within boundaries. Working within boundaries, they violate the most orderly structure of administration of the universe, which is almighty, omnipresent—present in every grain of creation—for all time, in all future, all past, and all present. . . .

‘A government is only significant for its name if it is capable of preventing problems.  Being a scientist, Dr Hagelin has beautifully and clearly described it, “Heyam Dukham Anagatam—The suffering that has not yet come should be prevented.” And there are measures to prevent it. All measures are centred in the Unified Field of all the laws of nature, which is the transcendental field of all the laws of nature.  
Realizing this, we had to create a government in order to make every government successful. We have been saying this for months, years, and decades together. . . .  

‘I am full of hope that the governments will come out to be significant to their purpose. The governments will come out to be purposeful. They will introduce that education in which the Unified Field will be functioning for them. . . . 

‘Now the upsurge of the pure knowledge of the Unified Field is going to change the situation from darkness to light. . . . Anyone who has been suffering in the dark has a chance to enjoy. . . . This is the time we want to flash the light. . . .  

‘Students should plunge into the Transcendental Meditation Programme. Spend an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening, wherever you are. Ask Dr Hagelin and he can supply some teachers. Learn Transcendental Meditation. Eat proper, organic food. . . .

‘Students, get to immortality within your own Self in the experience of bliss consciousness in the Unified Field, and you will be able to perpetuate peace in yourself and command situations and circumstances. You will not be a slave of situations and circumstances. You will have mastery over Natural Law—mastery over situations and circumstances. . . .  

‘They have to begin to practise Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques. Yogic Flying is the proof of gaining command over Natural Law. It is a practical thing and not a thing of mysticism. It will not be achieved through lecturing, but through quiet diving within oneself. Diving within oneself means diving into the bliss of the Unified Field.  

‘The Unified Field is “Satchitananda”. It does not matter if it is a Sanskrit expression or an English expression; the reality, the content, and the material are the same, whether you call them the will of God, the light of God, or Natural Law from science, physics, chemistry, biology, or any of the physical sciences, or any field of the science of consciousness.  

‘It is good for every country’s president, prime minister, and education and health ministers to realize they do not know something that will make them really good administrators, and will successfully allow them to play their parental role for their people. Now, that level of consciousness that is easily available. It must be availed.

‘Children will not have it unless their parents, teachers, and friends lead them to it. Therefore, whosoever is in this position should understand that what is being offered from the level of science, consciousness, and religion is invincibility, immortality, eternity, totality, all possibilities. That is our offer today, and we are proud of it. We have been saying this for the last fifty years, and now is the time.’
