April 2005 Press Conference Highlights
Opening Remarks
Maharishi:
‘Jai Guru Dev. We are now beyond talking. We are engaged in producing
the effect, about which we have talked enough. Now is the time for me
to know from the world press if anything good is happening in any part
of the world, week after week. We are engaged in this process of creating
that long-awaited, long-desired goal of life in affluence, peace, happiness,
harmony, and freedom from sickness and suffering. We are onto that. We
have entered the gate of that golden time. Our time is not for any more
explanations, but to produce the effect.
‘I congratulate Dr John Hagelin, the world-renowned quantum physicist,
who so beautifully, simply, and with total authority on Natural Law, rings
the bell of Eureka for this generation. It does not matter what has been
in the past, but now the world has a hold on consciousness, the Unified
Field of Natural Law. In the majority, the world has unconsciously the
hold on total Natural Law, because it is still in the hands of a few scientists.
The Unified Field is still a matter of possession by a few scientists.
That is why Dr Hagelin is inviting the scientists of the world who have
knowledge of Natural Law, which governs the universe with perfect order
and in perfect harmony. That ideal of administration is needed in the
world.
‘Dr Hagelin has called it a “Peace Government”. This
is in contrast to the huge activity of governing that is known in the
world as government. Our joy is that all the huge activity of the government,
which is of all kinds, has its basis in the self-referral state of consciousness.
That self-referral state of consciousness is totality of Natural Law.
‘We are establishing a global government by using that level of
law which is total Natural Law—undisturbable by anything. Inside,
it is bliss; outside, it is itself. So life has to be a move of bliss.
We have started this from three or four different angles.
‘I will not go into the mechanics of it. I just want to see—I
want to ask the world press—if there is anything happening in the
world, week after week. I would enjoy listening to that, because even
if one candle is lit up in a dark room, there is some sense of light.
With two candles, three candles, and four candles, the light intensity
is created more and more, and darkness is less and less.
‘Darkness, in this case, is disharmony, conflicts, sicknesses, quarrels,
and all negative things in the country, for which the government has,
I would say, no cure. These jails and these courts of punishment only
declare the ineffectiveness and failures of administration. The administration
has not educated the people. Uneducated or ill-educated people, half-educated
people, are always in confusion whether this is right or that is right.
In that, they have conflicting opinions. . . .
‘All these patches of darkness begin to fade away when light begins
to shine in all these patches of darkness. . . .
‘Now, I have quietly started to do something which will be like
adding candles in the darkness. Each candle, brought in fresh, increases
the light in the darkness and decreases the darkness. When the darkness
begins to go away bit by bit, clarity rises bit by bit.
‘We expect this science of coherence, positivity, good health, and
sensible thinking to dawn in some part of the world. The world will always
remain the same, only the difference will be in whether it is coherence,
in happiness, in joy of life, or in suffering.
‘We want to hear from the world press. Rather than I explain, I
want to hear now. I have explained enough. Dr Hagelin, with his very simple
words and very simple logic, speaks the language of time. He will continue
to speak the language of time, but he also knows that when someone is
deaf, howsoever much you shout at him, he is not going to hear, so he
is not going to respond.
‘I have decided not to explain, not to give explanations, because
what is the use of giving explanations to a man who has holes in his brain
and cannot think and cannot understand? Why waste time on him?
‘There is a proverb in India that says when you play beautiful music
to a buffalo, and the buffalo is in sleep, who hears it? Therefore, it
is not time for me anymore to talk about it. I am engaged in creating,
in one word, world peace. Peace means good health, good thinking, not
doing anything wrong, not thinking anything wrong, not speaking anything
wrong—everything in the light of God, everything in good, everything
for good.
‘There is the ideal of global administration. The ideal of universal
administration is, and should be, the government of every little country
everywhere on our earth, in our galaxy, in our solar system, and in our
ever-expanding universe. Administration is for order, not for disorder.
‘Dr Hagelin, ask the world press if anything good happened last
week. Every week, I will be asking if the world press can tell me whether
any good thing is happening in any part of the world. This will give me
some evidence that something has been happening.
‘That will be a good turnaround. Rather than the world press taking
from me, now I want the world press to give me some news of what they
see. Tell me what it is. That will help me to press one more switch here
and one more switch there. Press the switch of Yoga, or press the switch
of Karma, or press the switch of Vedanta, or press the switch of Ayurveda,
or press the switch of Gandharva Veda—this, this, this. The news
of changes in world events, world trends, and world thinking will help
me to press some new buttons, and press more hard on the old buttons [laughter].
‘Now ask the press if there has been any good in any part of the
world last week. These are the days for us to enjoy without any strain.
We are in the jolly mood now.’
Question:
The Effect of Maharishi’s Programmes in India
Dr
Hagelin: ‘Maharishi recently announced that he has launched
a programme to create a problem-free India which will serve as a stepping-stone
to creating a problem-free world. Maharishi told the press that they will
be able to see the first signs of this transformation in the far more
harmonious functioning of Indian national consciousness. This, of course,
is exactly what we have seen so dramatically this week—even more
dramatically than last week. What exactly is Maharishi’s programme
for India? How is Maharishi producing such a dramatic effect of change
in the government and people of India?’
Maharishi: ‘Through
a little more of Veda in Indian national consciousness, and a little more
of the awakening of Total Knowledge. That means more of Veda, and that
means a little more of the awakening of one’s own self-referral
consciousness. All our programmes are theoretically and practically motivated
to increase harmony in national consciousness. So little by little, little
by little.
‘These two weeks we are alert. We know from the practicality of
our history that India is the land of Veda. So coherence and harmony are
not new things in India. Only, they have been shadowed by the wrong kind
of influence.
‘We say that this has been the time of darkness, and now is the
dawn of light. The dawn of light is the eternal light of India, the eternal
administrator of the ever-expanding universe. There is nothing new happening,
only, the darkness is disappearing as more and more Indian brain physiologies
are functioning in greater coherence. In terms of modern language, it
is just that. What we are adopting is nothing new. It is the same old
Veda, the same old Vedic Mantras, the same age-old systems of performing
some specific actions which are called Vedic actions, which are called
Yagyas, and which are called the effect of Yoga.
‘This whole thing is dawning as an increasing number of human awarenesses
are opening to their own basis in silence in terms of Shiva and Shakti,
the silence and the power of silence. What has been in the market was
huge, loud cries, and huge confusing noises here and there. Now what is
happening is that gradually, through the programmes that we are quietly
adopting, we have Vedic performances and Vedic programmes. With that,
silence is beginning to be more and more awake in increasing numbers of
human brains in India.
‘Vedic technology has the competence of bringing to wakefulness
the entire cosmic intelligence in the individual intelligence. This awakening
is called enlightenment. With just a little more input, we will be able
to have larger numbers of people conforming to their own internal draw.
‘Internal draw is a natural thing. Transcending is a natural process
of the mind. As more and more people do it, more and more darkness will
go, and more and more behaviour will be coherent. It will be more coherent,
that is all.
‘World
peace is going to rise through this. Now we only have to see how soon
and how much coherence spreads from this land of the Veda, India, to other
parts of the world. It should not take a long time because the sun rises,
and its many, many rays take the light of the sun to everywhere they can.
The spreading of the influence of coherence, harmony, happiness, and every
good to everyone—all those nice things—happens naturally.
Only, we have to see how it becomes more and more manifest in the market-place
of the world—everywhere.
‘All the wrong things that have happened in the world are due to
wrong education, wrong food, wrong medicine, wrong behaviour, and the
wrong laws of the people. What is going to be now? Dr Hagelin is forming
a government everywhere—a government of scientists who know Natural
Law.
‘All the ignorant people creating confusion, division, quarrels,
fights, and all wrong things will all simply disappear. They will change
themselves, or they will be out, finished, like that. Only, we have to
see how soon it happens, how soon we can gather enough candles in number
to eliminate the whole darkness. We are sure that each candle added to
the crowd of candles increases the light and decreases the darkness, that
is all.
‘It is our joy to hear from the press. Let us see what comes next
week.’
Question:
The Difference Between Practising TM and Listening to Vedic Recitation
Dr
Hagelin: ‘Yes, Maharishi, it is very beautiful. Just in
from the Middle East are a couple of reports. First, a statement from
Egypt explaining that “Warmth Grows with Israel”. This is
an article explaining warming diplomatic ties between the long-term enemies
Israel and Egypt. Another headline says, “Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah
Abdul Aziz: Peace Can’t Be Achieved Through Wars”, calling
for peace in the Middle East. Signs everywhere really seem to be emanating
from India itself, where the signs of rising invincibility, strength,
peace, and coherence are really the most striking in the world today.
‘Maharishi, there is a question from the Indian press on the nature
of the effect produced. What is the difference between an individual practising
the Transcendental Meditation Technique and experiencing the field of
the Veda within his own silent Self, the Unified Field which is beyond
the senses, and the same individual listening through his ears to the
sounds of the Unified Field during Vedic recitation? Do these two different
experiences—transcending and listening—produce the same effect?
Or is transcending more fundamental and therefore more important than
the other?’
Maharishi: ‘Transcending
is the way—entering into that thing. Transcendental Consciousness
whispers to itself. They are the Mantras of the Veda, the sound of the
transcendent which is not in the audible sense. It is in the inaudibility
of sound. Transcending is the way—entering into it.
‘The Veda, Vedic sound, is the sound of the unmanifest reality.
The sound of the unmanifest is called the sound of the memory—some
memory in the ocean of silence. In the ocean of an unbounded water body,
a wave rises. Wherever there is a wave, there is a sound.
‘This self-referral sound is the sound of the Veda. Therefore, each
sound in the field of memory is the sound of the whole ocean. Therefore,
in each word of the Veda, total Natural Law is available. When it is pronounced,
it is heard—similar reverberations go to the transcendent. They
are similar because of the physiology of the body. Because of the physiology
of the body, that level of consciousness begins to pulsate in itself.
This is the advantage of listening to the Veda.
‘Otherwise, Veda is not on the audible level of the ears—no.
It is audible beyond the relative value of audibility or anything. It
is the source of the senses. It is the common basis of all senses. Everything
makes sense there. And everything, anything does not make a sense out
of it. That is why harmony is the reality of that level of intelligence,
which is transcendental. The Vedic recitation has an outside help.
‘The two things cannot be separated. They are the same reality.
The whole physiology, as described on the basis of the research of Raja
Raamji, is consciousness only. Physiology is consciousness. It is just
like an ice ball is water. Water is only vapour, steam. Steam is just
due to the temperature difference. So it gains a name, but it is the transformation
of the previous stage of development.
‘This is called Karma, which means action according to Dharma, Karma
according to Dharma. An example is the sap. Now it becomes a green leaf.
Sap has its own characteristic qualities, and these characteristic qualities
keep it as sap. This sap becomes the green leaf. This transformation is
also Karma, but this Karma is according to Dharma. Dharma means that quality
which upholds the leaf. Dharma is that which upholds existence. Dharma
upholds Karma: Dharma which upholds activity, or Dharma which upholds
silence. Dharma is that quality which upholds. Dharma upholds silence,
Dharma upholds action, Dharma upholds silence and action together.
‘In this, we get three qualities of Karma: only silence, only action,
and silence and action together. Silence and action together, again, has
two divisions: silence moving towards Karma, towards action, and action
moving towards silence. They are opposite in value. These opposite values
maintain Karma, action, and maintain the silence permeating it.
‘Here is the total grip of knowledge and action—silence and
dynamism together—in one single awareness. That awareness is the
custodian of Total Knowledge: total knowledge of silence, total knowledge
of action. Then that level of consciousness is balanced between silence
and dynamism. It is silent also, it is dynamism also.
‘The erratic dynamic quality is sustained by eternal silence. This
is the relationship between Veda and Vedanta, and Karma and Yoga. All
these different aspects of knowledge in the Vedic Literature bring out
a very coherent picture of advancement in sequence and life in balance.
. . .
‘The days of wrong principles, on which people have been wasting
their precious life, are over in this scientific age. Now the age has
come in to bring a Peace Government. This will be in the hands of those
who know peace resides in dynamism, and dynamism resides in peace. All
fields of diversity in togetherness make the Unified Field—diversity,
unity, diversity, unity, diversity, unity.
‘We think we are right; other people think they are right. They
think we are wrong; we think they are very wrong. Right will prevail;
wrong will remain obscure, behind the scene. “Truth triumphs”
is a saying in the world, where even untruth triumphs. In the world of
untruth triumphing, still the memory is that what triumphs is truth. Satyam
Eva Jayate, Satyam Eva Jayate, Satyam Eva Jayate.
‘Prahlad was the tender son of Hiranyakasipu. What was he? A soft
child. He was scolded, “Where is your Raam?” Then he said,
“It is difficult for me to isolate Raam either here or there. Where
can I tell you my Raam is?” This is the innocent voice of a child
of India, the land of the Veda, against the wrong voice of his own father.
‘It is not the law of the administrator, but it is the administrator
that speaks out the law. What he speaks out is law. The moment Prahlad
said, “It is not possible for me to isolate Raam, either in the
pillar or in you or in me or here or there. Whatever I can show you, if
you have a cosmic vision, then you are with me in my Raam. But if you
do not have it, how can I show you? I am not in a position to isolate
the omnipresent. I am not capable of isolating any law from total Natural
Law. Raam is Brahm, total Natural Law. It is total Natural Law. How I
can save you?”. . .
‘India is the land of the Veda. India is the light of the world.
Vedic wisdom is the wisdom of administration of cosmic law, the administration
of the universe. That is why I have made a target of India. When the Indian
government is the government of Natural Law, is the government of the
Constitution of the Universe, which is Veda, and is a Vedic government,
then I think this will be the criterion of our success.
‘Till then, we will be moving in that direction. When the plant
is tender, it has to be saved from outside. When it has been saved to
grow strong, it becomes a big tree. Elephants are tied down to that small
plant. From the state of Kali Yuga, gently we are raising the Sattwa.
The rise of Sattwa will take care of all wrongs, so many kinds of wrong.
‘That means Dharma has been shadowed by wrong. “Dharma”
means that which sustains. What sustains is purity. Life is sustained
by purity; life is sustained by harmony. Life is eaten up by impurity;
life is distorted by all the impurities and disharmonies. In darkness
and night, we have the torch.
‘We think we are right; we want to prove that we are right. How
do we prove this? We do not have to prove it. We only align ourselves
with that omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent system of administration,
that level of unity which administers diversity automatically, that one
sun of Total Knowledge. Through its radiance, through its rays, it lights
the whole space around it. It is a very beautiful thing.
‘So we wait. We wait, day after day, week after week, to hear from
the world press from what corner some positivity may be seen rising, seen
increasing. We continue our increasing waves of joy. The world is going
to enjoy.’
